In acrobat reader 8.0, you can go to Edit–>preferences and in the window that opens, choose document from the menu in the left hand side. In the right hand panel there is the option to “restore last view settings”. Check this and it should reposition you to where you closed the pdf document !
Not sure if this option is available in previous versions of the adobe reader software though.
